The second and final weekend of the 72nd Annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival is happening this Saturday and Sunday in Little Tokyo. Nisei Week celebrates the vibrant Japanese and Japanese-American culture we have here in Los Angeles and is the nation’s longest running cultural event of its kind. Saturday’s festival starts at 9AM and will feature vendors and cultural exhibits as well as exciting entertainment like the Rubik’s Cube Championship, Gyoza Eating Competition, and kendo (sword-fighting martial arts) demonstrations. Sunday will feature the 19th Annual Taiko Gathering, which is the art of traditional Japanese drumming, so there is sure to be performances by several taiko ensembles. In addition to the plaza festival, the Japanese-American Cultural & Community Center will open its doors for visitors to see their cultural exhibits, which include samurai armor and swords, bonsai (Japanese art using miniature trees), and Japanese calligraphy. So head down to Little Tokyo this weekend to experience some Japanese tradition and culture!
