Two Buddhist temples in Little Tokyo will be having their annual Obon Festivals this weekend on July 7th and 8th. Obon is a Japanese tradition celebrating and honoring one’s ancestors. Both the Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and the Zenshuji Soto Mission will have festivals featuring live taiko (Japanese drumming), Bon Odori (traditional dance), yummy Japanese food, carnival games, and plenty more entertainment and fun for the whole family. Nishi Hongwanji’s festival runs from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM and some of their unique offerings are tea ceremony and judo (Japanese martial art) demonstrations. Zenshuji Soto Mission will be open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and offers karaoke and ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) exhibits. Admission to both are free, so head to downtown this weekend for these fun cultural events!
